Hello members,

I saw in the older posts on Nuestros Ranchos a few posts about the Garcia
de Leon family from Celaya Guanajuato and wanted to ask a question. One of
my direct ancestors has parents named Toribio Garcia and Juana Hernandes
but my ancestor is sometime listed as mulato and sometime Indian and I saw
that the Garcia de Leon family are Spanish. Is it possible that my ancestor
is mulato or Indian with a Spanish father?

Hello Mia :

Indian with a spanish father doesn't exist, he could be mestizo from Spanish
and Indian or mulato from Spanish and Black . So a member of the Spanish
family Garcia de Leon that marry with an Indian or a black woman .

But sometimes Black slaves and Indians servants , like they did'nt have last
names use to take those of the master, so I think you should continue to
look until you find where is the conection with that family in Celaya.

Good luck

Julieta

Hi Mia,

Technically, it would not be possible to be an Indio if the father was an español, and fairly unlikely to be a mulato, unless the mother was actually black, but, in reality the colonial caste system was mostly based on appearance and features and not on a thorough investigation into their racial or ethnic background. I'm guessing that your question is related to Toribio García de León. You are correct that he is español, but, if you look at George Fulton's Aguascalientes Matrimonial Information here: http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18014

you'll see that Toribio Garcia de Leon married a Mulata named Juana Hernandes, so, although their children should be more accurately classified as Moriscos, any number of other caste labels are possible based on their appearance.

Here is the actual IM for Toribio García de León and Juana Hernandes : https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11671-65970-66?cc=1502404&…

Toribio García de León was baptized on 1 May 1669 in Aguascalientes: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12047-90519-12?cc=1502404&…

As it says on his baptism and Información Matrimonial, he is the son of Juan García de León and Juana de Ulloa. The last will and testament of Bartolomé García de León confirms that he and his first wife Antonia de Cáceres are the parents of Juan García de León.

Bartolomé García de León married Antonia de Cáceres in Aguascalientes on 24 Feb 1636:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11824-51976-86?cc=1502404&…

Antonia de Caceres died around 21 Jun 1646 from childbirth: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11773-145304-59?cc=1502404…

Bartolomé García de León died 27 Mar 1679 in Aguascalientes: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11773-147019-59?cc=1502404…

That's all the information I know.

Good luck in your search,

Christopher de Cuellar

Mia,

There were in fact members of the García de León who mixed with other caste and did produce mulatos. They continued using their last names, I have also found a couple ilegitimate lines in Aguascalientes, Celaya and Teocaltiche.
