That's great! It's amazing how we find some of our ancestors information.
Good luck and I will keep posting on my findings. I, too, usually stick to
just the microfilms for information.
Eric,
Thank you so much for your kind offer to help. Yes, you're absolutely right about the miss-spellings. It's a minor miracle I found my mother Enedina Onate, as she was entered as Pardina! I have Onate crossings at Laredo, TX from 1917 to 1944 en route to San Antonio, and they rendered some good information. I was hoping to search two other border crossing towns Del Rio, TX and Eagle Pass, TX within the time frame of 1910-1940. Unfortunately, all I can give you are the first names of my Onates: Rosalio, Petra, Adolfo, Leonarda, Luis, and Maria Angela. I will totally understand if the information I'm giving you is to too vague. Thanks again for your generous offer and have a good evening.

Alice,
Outside of a trip to a NARA archives and browsing miles of Microfilm,
Ancestry is the only way. I have a subscription and much success searching
these. I've collected almost a hundred with my families on them. There is a
wide variety of forms, some with minimal information, some with extensive.
The quality is fair to poor. Misspellings seem to be the rule rather than
the exception.
If you give me the facts I'll look it up for you. Please include full
names, birth dates, approximate dates of crossing, destination, place of
origin, and other family members if you have them.

Seems you had more information than you gave. If you have the Laredo
crossings, you knew they would have been born around 1900 and were from
Aguacalientes? That's if the Adolfo is your Onate. Do you have their
mother's family name?
Which are siblings and which are parents?
Do you have them on the 1930 census in San Antonio?
Do you know if crossed other places or are you just hoping for more
information?
Not trying to be mean or nosy, just need every clue to winnow them out of
the crowd.
I'm familiar with research in these places. My g grandfather Dr L. E.
Calleja operated a medical clinic in Piedras Negras while living across the
border in Eagle Pass during the late 1920s and 30s. After he died in '35,
his widow lived in Laredo. Their daughters Esperanza and Consuelo worked for
the Mexican Embassay in San Antonio.
My Robledo family lived in San Antonio since 1926 after fleeing the
revolution and losing their property, My G grandfather worked as a Pullman
conductor on the San Antonio to Laredo to Mexico City line until the 1950s

I looked at the record you are talking about for your mother. This what I
get from it
Enedina Onate de Bravo
record date 9-23-1944
age 27 years born at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon , Mexico
accompanied by Maria Teresa- 5 years
there is a date of 5-14-1915 , not sure what it means
I can't make out the line with name and address of relative or friend in
Mexico
She signs it Enedina O de Bravo, so I'll look for crossings under de Bravo
now.

Hello Eric,
You're not mean, you're extremely thoughtful! Thank you, yes those are my parents. However, another problem with these border crossing documents is that the info is inaccurate. My mother had told us that in order to "expedite" the process, they all claimed to be from Monterrey, which wasn't true. It's my Onates that I'm having trouble with. This is what I've got: My maternal ggrandparents are Rosalio Onate and Petra Candelas. Their children were Maria Angela, Luis, Adolfo, and Leonarda. Rosalio, Maria Angela, and Pedro (her son?)acrossed on 02/12/1917 claiming Villa Garcia, Zac as where they're from.
Then there's another family crossing this time including Adolfo on 04/16/1920 where they all claim they're from Aguascalientes. I've never seen Petra, Leonarda, or Luis on the Laredo crossings and I know that Leonarda also visited San Antonio, so she might have crossed at Del Rio or Eagle Pass. That might give birthdates to work with. As a matter of fact, I've found a Petra Candelas death record in San Antonio that indicates she was married, names Francisco Candelas as father, but doesn't name the spouse or mother! So, I can't verify it's my Petra, because mine was married to Rosalio. I know that her daughter Maria Angela was living in SA then. I'm not sure that the actual Texas Deaths film contains more info? 1930 Aguas, Aguas Census doesn't show any of these people, neither do they show in any family history search. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks again for you thoughfulness.

Maybe you can get the death certificate itself from Bexar county. I've
gotten one from them before to determine if a Robledo was related to us. It
cost under $20. I'll look around this week and see if I can find the
procedure to follow.
" Expediting" was often neccesary. My great grandmother was coming to visit
San Antonio in the late '30s and was deneied entry because she didn't have a
birth certificate. She was Scotch/English but had lived in Mexico since she
was a young child, but was born in Iowa. It took over 3 months of legal
wrangling to get her in. This when it was decided my grandfather was "born"
in Chicago. All his earlier Border crossings showed his birthplace as San
Luis Potosi. Good thing they didn't have computers then.
So my dad became Bob Edgar, not Heladio Robledo Calleja.

Good Afternoon Eric,
I have one last known living contact of my mother's Onate family, an older cousin (granddaugher of my greataunt Maria Angela Onate)that now lives out of state, but lived many years in San Antonio with Maria Angela. I email her regularly to pick her brain. She told me that like many of our antepasados, genealogy didn't mean much to her grandmother, Maria Angela, so before she died she burned all the old pictures and documents. Weird, because my mother did the same thing and they didn't really know each other. When I told my cousin about a Petra Candelas (our ggrandmother)death in SA, she also looked up the certificate online and said that was a different woman, as the birthdate was off and the death certificate was signed by a person unknown to her. So, I'm back at square one, hoping to find Del Rio/Eagle Pass border crossing info for birthyears and places on Petra Candelas, Leornarda Onate, or Luis Onate. Take care and thanks again for your help. Alice Blake

Alice,
Maybe you can get the death certificate itself from Bexar county. I've
gotten one from them before to determine if a Robledo was related to us. It
cost under $20.

Hi Angie,
What a great idea! I was hoping someone from our group of nearly 400 would come up with some help. I'll contact it tomorrow and hopefully they do subscribe. Being so close to the border and the destination of so many that crossed, I would hope that the San Antonio library offers it. Thanks again for coming through for me. Alice Blake
Have you tried your local public library. The library near me also has a Ancestry.com subscription. The library has access to databases: a newpaper archive, a obit archive, and Ancestry.com, plus others... You may want to try asking your local library.
Good Luck,
Angie Godina

Dear Angie,
Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your were absolutely right! My neigborhood public library has Ancestry.com. It was so thoughtful of you to suggest this. Alice Blake

Border Crossings
Eric,
Thank you so much for your kind offer to help.

Border Crossings
Alice ,
I looked at the record you are talking about for your mother. This what I
get from it
Enedina Onate de Bravo
record date 9-23-1944
age 27 years born at Monterrey, Nuevo Leon , Mexico
accompanied by Maria Teresa- 5 years
there is a date of 5-14-1915 , not sure what it means
I can't make out the line with name and address of relative or friend in
Mexico
She signs it Enedina O de Bravo, so I'll look for crossings under de Bravo
now.

Border Crossings
Hello Eric,
You're not mean, you're extremely thoughtful!

Border Crossings
Alice,
Maybe you can get the death certificate itself from Bexar county. I've
gotten one from them before to determine if a Robledo was related to us. It
cost under $20. I'll look around this week and see if I can find the
procedure to follow.
Have you tried using the 1930 Mexico Census at the family Search Pilot Site
http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start

Border Crossings
Alice Blake

Border Crossings
Hi Angie,
What a great idea! I was hoping someone from our group of nearly 400 would come up with some help. I'll contact it tomorrow and hopefully they do subscribe. Being so close to the border and the destination of so many that crossed, I would hope that the San Antonio library offers it. Thanks again for coming through for me. Alice Blake

Alice,
Have you tried your local public library.

Alice Blake

Dear Group,

Border Crossings
Alice,
Outside of a trip to a NARA archives and browsing miles of Microfilm,
Ancestry is the only way.
