All except Juan Masias that I know have been married in Cienega de Mata, Jalisco. Maria,
Several members of the group descend from the same Macias-Valades line. Juan Macias-Valades was son of Joseph Macias Valades and Catalina de la Vega. I guess you must know that Juan married Juana Domingues (I got information on the Dominguez and Alonso de los Hinojos if you are interested). Sebastian Macias as you may know married Juana Gonzalez de Hermosillo daughter of Diego Alonso Gonzalez de Hermosillo and Juana Aldrete. We got lot of information on the Gonzalez Hermosillo line. Also you may know that from Juana Aldrete you will be connected to the Petronila Moctezuma line (reportedly the great-great grandaughter of Moctezuma II Aztec Emperor). Pedro Nolasco Macias married Maria de los Remedios (de los Reyes) Aranda. I have some information on the Martin Sotoymayor family of Maria. I have information on many of their children, including Manuel Ygnacio and his brother Jose Miguel (my family line). I will be happy to exchange information with you.
Sincerely
Jaime Alvarado

Hello Jaime
I am in awe with all this information. I did have the names of Juana's parents Juan Hernandez and Ana Domingues de los Hinojos but I haven't researched the films with Juana Domingues birth date. I have it as 11 Apr 1665 Ags. Is that what you have?
I do have a photocopy of Sevastian Macias-Valades and Juana Hermosillo marriage on 6 July 1710 from the LDS library. I still have to verify on the birth date of Juana Alderte, the date I have of her christening is 10 Jan 1689. Do you have the same? I had no idea about the connection of Juana Alderte to Moctezuma II. How did you find it? Is it in the LDS films? Do you any books that you might recommend for research? For the children of Pedro Nolasco Macias and Ma Remedioz Aranda I have,
Manuel Ygnacio (?1750); Francisco Antonio (?); Joseph de la Trinidad, b.16 Jan 1746; Juan Antonio c.20 Jan 1748; Ma. Antonia Theodora (?). Well that's all I have at the moment. Thank you for sharing. I hope to communicate further.
Sincerely,

Introduction:Maria Gonzalez
HI María, Im glad we have a new member to our great group, we are already related, I also descend from the Macías-Valadés like many alteños here. Juan was married 12 jun 1693 in Aguascalientes to Juana Gómez de Espejo, we were actually talking about this not too long ago. Well I can send what I have tomorrow, Juan was son of José de M. y V.
and Catalina Tavera de la Vega (aka: Rubio) (we can give an entire explanation as to the AKA's for many Spanish people of the time) People could have used any numerous last names. Juana Gómez de Espejo was daughter of Juan Hernández y Gamiño and Ana Domínguez, I believe Juana used her grandmother's name, if im not mistaken, I can check. *Note Juana did not use her father's name but her grandmother. Ill send you a file with all my stuff starting with Pedro Nolasco, Im mostly useful and helpful within the 1500s-late 1700's. I have a huge alteño family database so I can try helping you with other lines If you'd like, I dont want to keep all this stuff to myself, we need to share so we can keep growing our tree. I learned citing is important! -Daniel Camino

Hi Daniel, thanks for the information. Can you direct me where to start reading up on the explanation as to why and how the Spanish people would use AKA's. I would like to read up on the states of Jalisco and Aguascalientes. Thanks again, M Gonzalez
Juan Macias-Valades
Im glad it helps, Im not sure where or if there is such a book about specifially the AKA. I know Retoñs just explain where each person got the AKA. "El apellido que utilizó por su abuela..something typical youd read. Well to get to he point, before the indepndence of Spanish America, there were no rules of surnames, not even the typical father mother combo. Until the Borbón Reforms it was placed. Take this family Rodrigo Olivares and María Hurtado de Mendoza, hey had Catalina, Francisca and Isbael Hurtado de Mendoza and Bernabé Olivares, notice all daughters take mother's name. Isabel is named after her grandmother the GREAT isabel I Hurtado de Mendoza. Many Ranchos members can trace to her several times. I trace to her on 12 different time, alteños intermarried too Much. LOL. Also the children could take which ever side was more important or prominant. If both were of equal, then they could combine last names. The original Hurtado de Mendoza broke into about 7 different families all contain Mendoza,
Hurtado de Mendoza, Gómez de Mendoza, Gutiérrez de Mendoza, Sánchez de Mendoza, de Ornellas y Hurtado de Mendoza, de Alcalá y Hurtado de Mendoza, López de Quezada y Mendoza. Most of the families in Los Altos also happend like this, creating different new names must have been a joy. I hope this helps. Also you may here Los Altos family, Yes the main Los Altos de Jalisco is a region but its family (alteños) extend into southern Zacatecas, northeast Zacatecas (pinos area), Aguascalientes, Guanjuato, Northwestern michoacán, southern Jalisco and to Guadalajara. This is because the rapid movement and travel Alteños did, taking them their blood alteño. -Daniel
