Esther:
Just out of curiosity, what information do you have about your Juan de Arredondo Aguero that lets you know that this is not him? It strikes me that a compound name like "Arredondo Aguero" is uncommon enough that two people who are not related to you migrating from Spain to Mexico with that name at the same time that you think your ancestors migrated would be a pretty unprobable coincidence.
Also, if you have more information, we can try redoing the search.
Arredondos in AER
Arturo,
I know from documents in Cerralvo and Monterrey that Juan came in the 1630s from the Montains
of Burgos with his son Mateo and his cousin Hernando Arredondo Aguero. They were part of the company of the new governor of Nuevo Leon Martin Zavala, son of General Agustin Zavala of Zacatecas and an Ana Sepeulveda, also my ancestor. Martin, though iligitimate, was educated abroad in Spain. Martin was the only child of Agustin Zavala and inherited everything. He came to Nuevo Leon with his mother, step father and several half brothers and a half sister.
Juan upon entering Nuevo Leon married a daughter of Ana Sosa , daughter of Alonso Albernoz de Sosa
and Beatriz Rodriguez Navarro. Hernando married another daughter of Ana Sosa. Ana was married to ALonso Farias. Alonso Albernoz de Sosa was bushwhacked in New Mexico( San Juan) about 1600
by Vicente Saldivar, nephew of Juan Onate. Alonso wanted to to return to Zacatecas because New Mexico was not turning out to be the venture he had hoped. Onate did not like people dissenting.
He made an example of Alonso. The widow Beatriz Rodriguez Navarro, grand daughter of the conquistador Juan Navarro then married Bernabe de las Casas, a relative of th archbisop Bartolome de las Casas. When they got a chance when Onate and a lot of the military were out foraging for food they took their families and returned to Zacatecas. Juan Onate and Vicente Zaldivar were brought back for trial.
Another of Ana's daughter's married a Vicente Zaldivar, not the Vicente Zaldivar above, but a relative and descendant of the Zaldivars and the Onates.
I descend from Beatriz through both her marriages about 8 times, through the Arredondos, Farias, Villarreals, Zaldivars, and the Lobo Guerreros.

Arredondo y Ruesga
Esther:
This is likely the same Juan de Arredondo... It may be that Damasio was an alternate name for Hernando... Arredondo and Ruesga are basically the same place. Arredondo is a town in the Valley of Ruesga in what is now Cantabria. However, the valley is in the mountains between Burgos and Cantabria and it may be that it those days, the town and valley were part of what was considered Burgos and thus would be in the "montanas de Burgos."
Many people who came over came with licensias sponsored y rich people already in the new world and thus the "como criado" wording in the license. It is probable that he came in 1626, would have worked in one of the major cities (perhaps for his sponsor) and then headed out to the frontier in the north for more opportunity.
I will try to get you the license document.
Euereka with Martin Zavala
Esther:
I think we have your Juan de Arredondo. Not the one that I originally thought but another one that was on the original list. Once you told me who Martin Zavala was it was easy enough to track down the licencia for him and the numerous servants that he sponsored to bring over. On that same date appears a Juan de Arredondo headed for Nueva Espana.
In the licensia for Juan de Arredondo, one of the witnesses is Fernando de Arrendondo, su sobrino... it is kind of hard to read and perhaps the licensia is for the both of them and it was extracted incorrectly but I am pretty certain these are your Juan and Hernando de Arredondo.
