Noria de San Pantaleon/El Durazno/San Antonio de Belen, Zacatecas
Por makas_nc | 2:42 PM MST, Lun Abril 10, 2006
I've just uploaded 4 maps to the albums/maps area of the group primarily
for Ken Alva showing his Ranchos: Noria de San Pantaleon. But I seem to
remember someone else talking about El Durazno and San Antonio de Belen
Who lives there now? What kind of economy is there? My goodness, how sad to see this place. You're right in that the vistas there are lovely but how sad that there appears to be very little life in that place. Marge V.:)
I am interested in communicating with anyone with knowledge of La Noria de San Pantaleon and its people.
Furthermore I have pictures of this "pueblo fantasma" that I took one year ago. If anyone is interested I can upload a few pictures if it is OK with Joseph. It is a true ghost town with a very old cemetary right next to it.
Please upload your pictures. I would love to see them. That is one of the reasons why we put up the albums function on the site. I think there are a number of people who are members of the group who have never had a chance to see what the region that we are researching looks like and it would probably be very precious for them (and me and others) to see your photos.
I have uploaded pictures of La Noria de San Panteleon, a place that is eerie but at the same time very peaceful and natural. When I was there I looked at the walls that were old and cracked; the next moment I could almost feel the activity and the life of the town spring from those same walls.
I have pictures of Sombrerete also. If someone has an interest in seeing this town which was used in many westerns years ago, I will upload them. It is truly a mining town. The Conde Don Fernando de la Campa y Cos, who was from the Valparaiso and Zacatecas, Zacatecas area, is buried here. The haciendas that stretch from Valaparaiso to Fresnillo and Zacatecas were built by de la Campa and his descendants. These haciendas today are simply shells of their former glory and mark the end of the personal wealth created by the silver mines of Zacatecas.
I would like for you to post pictures of Sombrerete.
I don't know if "comments" added to the pictures get automatically
delivered to the person who posts the pictures but I've added some
questions about the mine picture and the "grave" picture you uploaded.
Thanks for adding that. Well since they don't go out to the group here
they are?
[[[[[[
Yes I know you made mention of Silver in your email, but is there still
mineable Silver there? I would have thought that would have long since
been mined out. Goes to show you how much Silver was there and still is
there.

Who was that big one? Is it Don Fernando de la Campa y Cos'. Is your
G-Grandfather's one of those visible?
I was told that most of the markers especially going back to the 1800's
would have long rotted away because they would have simply been wooden
markers. Did you see any evidence of ancient wooden markers that were in
a nearly complete state of root, but still visible?
Those other markers just look like plumbing pipe shaped into crosses. Is
that what they are made of?
tell us more of this page.

Ed please upload the pictures of Sombrerete; my
grandmother and four generations Lopez family is from
the at area as well as my Gonzalez family. I'll look
forward to viewing these pictures.
Does anybody have any pictures of Sauz de los
Marquez??

Yes I have two, but they are not very good. Look in Albums-->Suaz de los
Marquez

ps: see the monument. Is that your main line relative: Francisco Muro
Marquez? He was Historiador now wouldn't that imply that he wrote
something about the area? Seems like we need to investigate this. If you
know how he is our Relative please let me know, maybe Susanna knows also.
Wow, Carol, now we have a mystery. that map I sent to the group
positively shows Sauz de los Marquez in Zacatecas, but that monument
shows the name Sauz de los Marquez, JALISCO. Amazing. I hadn't
remembered that. We're going to have to do more investigating as to
where it is. I can't imagine that there would be two of them. Maybe the
Ranchos changed from Jalisco to Zacatecas recently since that monument
was put up in 1979.
I'm not sure this is the same person but here is a short piece from a
Historiador Francisco Muro Marquez:

Sauz de los Marquez is in Jalisco presently. It is part of the
municipality of Santa Maria de Los Angeles. It would not surprise me if
that rancho was at some point considered part of Zacatecas. It is right
on the border and I don't think those borders were very firm until very
recently.
The three little fingers of Jalisco that jut out into Zacatecas (which
include Santa Maria de los Angeles) are really an anomaly
geographically. They are the remnants of the military colony set up by
the Viceroy of New Spain around the Tlaxcaltec colonies of Colotlan and
Mezquitic. They remained under the control of the Viceroy and were not
subject to the rule of the Audiencia de Guadalajara until nearly the end
of the Spanish colony. Therefore they were not integrated into the
intendencia de Zacatecas when it was spun off from Jalisco (Nueva
Galicia).
You will note that Colotlan and Santa Maria de Los Angeles are actually
part of the diocese of Zacatecas and NOT Guadalajara. Furthermore, the
only way to access these towns by road is through Zacatecas... they have
no direct road access to any other part of Jalisco. They are basically
part of Zacatecas but for some historical anomaly that left them part of
Jalisco.

Your maps are obviously geological relief maps probably based on
satellite topography imaging. Unfortunately you cannot tell where
political boundaries are from space. I think your mapmaker was a bit
lazy in drawing the political boundaries on that map as there are no
"straight line" boundaries in the three-finger region on Jalisco. I
know that this is a big issue with Nayarit as the indigenous communities
in the Sierra de Huicholes have begun litigating land claims and often
neither they nor officials know what state their lands are in because
the boundaries are somewhat confusing and/or unclear...
I uploaded a map from INEGI's digital interactive map showing Santa
Maria de los Angeles. Though Sauz de los Marquez is not labeled, it is
easily discernable as the place where the three roads and one trail meet
just above the gray scale marker on the bottom right. It is clearly in
Jalisco.
I also put a link to the INEGI digital map. I will put up a separate
post about that.
I just uploaded a map to the Sauz de los Marquez album that shows it in
Zacatecas. Maybe the map is in error. . .if it is then that puts into
doubt this whole series of maps.

great. . .this is good to know. Even though these maps are very very
detailed they will have to be marked as "suspect" for accuracy.

I have uploaded pictures of Sombrerete in the album section. I have also added one more picture to the La Noria album. This last picture is one of old miners, circa 1900.
Joseph, I have made additional comments on the cemetary pictures of La Noria. There are a few people who still live there but I could not figure out where since it appeared to be a ghost town. If they lived there, I wonder if they had any water or electricity.
I can upload pictures of Zacatecas, Zacatecas if any one is interested.
yes please do load the Zacatecs, Zacatecas pictures.

Yes I see it now. . .I didn't read this before: [The cemetary where I
found the grave of my great grandfather, Agustin Salas. The crosses are
made of steel pipes either welded together or screwed onto a four way
pipe connector.]

I have uploaded pictures of Zacatecas, Zacatecas. I have also added a couple of pictures to La Noria album and will add a couple to Sombrerete album later today or tomorrow.
with the new site we have vastly more file space than in my miserly
Yahoo days. Yahoo was limiting us in more than one way. We have more
space and now we seem to be visible now that we're outside the Yahoo
curtain. Lately we've seen an increase of interest in joining Nuestros
Ranchos at least 50-100% more than what was seen while a Yahoo group.
upload away Ed,
When I get to 60% of my capacity of the new site I'll let everyone know.
In fact I'm purchasing the minimum package now with the hosting company
(Dreamhost) so the next step up would be a dream for us to reach because
that would mean we would have a tremendous input of great material to
assist us in our research.
Everyone Upload away. Show us pictures. Teach us lessons. Tell us your
Oral History. Give us your Recipes. Share with us your Cuentos/Stories.
Sing us your Songs. Recite to us your Poems.

ps: we can all be thankful to Arturo for his wonderful Webmaster

pps: contact Ken Alva about La Noria de San Pantaleon.

Dear Joseph,
Can we kick in with a contribution to you for sharing the cost of the

yes when and if the need comes about for us to upgrade to the next
DreamHost service plan I'll accept donations. Right now I've got it
covered. Here are our figures:
used:
Totals: 784.548 MB
Available is 1/2 of 22900MB since I've got my NuestraFamiliaUnida
podcast on it as well. So 1/2 is 11450MB and we haven't reached 1000MB
yet. So we can grow roughly 10 times larger than we are now before I
start sweating like I was on the Yahoo group.
Arturo Am I correctly estimating this?

If you think you can fill up 125 GB with podcasts on your other site, then yes, we only have 1/2 of the 250GB on your plan for this site. As far as I can tell we have less that 800MB used between the two sites... and that includes a fair deal of material that can be deleted (i.e. files I uploaded when building the site that are no longer needed). I think the Nuestros Ranchos site takes up less than 500MB now so we could theoretically store 20x the amount of data we currently have and more if Joseph is generous and lets this site use more than half of his disk space.
I really don't foresee this happening anytime soon.
Joseph and moderators,
I'm not sure where to post my poem in the new site. Would it be possible for me to submit it here and have one of you put it in the correct folder or file. I was thinking of submitting it to Somos Primos or your podcast, but I'm not sure how to go about doing so. Please advise..... yolanda medina perez

Please send it to both. Somos Primos will get your poem much more
exposure, but I want to read it too.
make a word file and put in ??? (send it to me and we'll figure out
where it will go)
# Member Genealogy Files
# Reference Materials
# Books and Articles
eventually we'll probably have more catagories. Maybe one that called:
Oral Histories/Poems/Stories
maybe another called Recipes/Misc.
What other catagories do we need?

Ghost Town
Who lives there now? What kind of economy is there? My goodness, how sad to see this place. You're right in that the vistas there are lovely but how sad that there appears to be very little life in that place. Marge V.:)
La Noria de San Pantaleon
I am interested in communicating with anyone with knowledge of La Noria de San Pantaleon and its people.
Furthermore I have pictures of this "pueblo fantasma" that I took one year ago. If anyone is interested I can upload a few pictures if it is OK with Joseph. It is a true ghost town with a very old cemetary right next to it.

Ghost Town Pictures
Ed:
Please upload your pictures. I would love to see them. That is one of the reasons why we put up the albums function on the site. I think there are a number of people who are members of the group who have never had a chance to see what the region that we are researching looks like and it would probably be very precious for them (and me and others) to see your photos.
La Noria de San Panteleon and Sombrerete
Ed
La Noria de San Panteleon and Sombrerete
Ed,
I would like for you to post pictures of Sombrerete.

Joseph,
Thank you for uploading the 4 Zacatecas maps depicting La Noria de San
Pantaleon, El Durazno and San Antonio de Belen.
However, I couldn't find them. Are they in the Zacatecas Folder in the
Albums / Maps section?
Thanks,

ps: see the monument.

They are basically
part of Zacatecas but for some historical anomaly that left them part of
Jalisco.

Sauz de los Marquez, JALISCO
I will put up a separate
post about that.

great. . .this is good to know. Even though these maps are very very
detailed they will have to be marked as "suspect" for accuracy.

Sauz de los Marquez, JALISCO
Thanks Arturo for the update on Sauz. I have found
most of my our parish records for my family in Santa
Maria and Colotlan.
Sombrerete photos and La Noria addition
I have uploaded pictures of Sombrerete in the album section. I have also added one more picture to the La Noria album. This last picture is one of old miners, circa 1900.
Joseph, I have made additional comments on the cemetary pictures of La Noria. There are a few people who still live there but I could not figure out where since it appeared to be a ghost town. If they lived there, I wonder if they had any water or electricity.
I can upload pictures of Zacatecas, Zacatecas if any one is interested.

Yes I see it now. . .I didn't read this before: [The cemetary where I
found the grave of my great grandfather, Agustin Salas. The crosses are
made of steel pipes either welded together or screwed onto a four way
pipe connector.]

ps: who was that big one in the middle? Was it your Great Grandfather?

Upload Away: was-La Noria de San Pantaleon
Ed,
with the new site we have vastly more file space than in my miserly
Recite to us your Poems.
joseph
ps: we can all be thankful to Arturo for his wonderful Webmaster
Wisardry for this new found freedom.
pps: contact Ken Alva about La Noria de San Pantaleon.

Can we kick in with a contribution to you for sharing the cost of the
package? Marge:)

Donations Accepted When We're 10x's bigger!
yes when and if the need comes about for us to upgrade to the next
DreamHost service plan I'll accept donations. Right now I've got it
covered. Here are our figures:
used:
Totals: 784.548 MB
Available is 1/2 of 22900MB since I've got my NuestraFamiliaUnida
podcast on it as well. So 1/2 is 11450MB and we haven't reached 1000MB
yet. So we can grow roughly 10 times larger than we are now before I
start sweating like I was on the Yahoo group.
Arturo Am I correctly estimating this?

Disk Space for the New Site
Joseph:
If you think you can fill up 125 GB with podcasts on your other site, then yes, we only have 1/2 of the 250GB on your plan for this site. As far as I can tell we have less that 800MB used between the two sites... and that includes a fair deal of material that can be deleted (i.e. files I uploaded when building the site that are no longer needed). I think the Nuestros Ranchos site takes up less than 500MB now so we could theoretically store 20x the amount of data we currently have and more if Joseph is generous and lets this site use more than half of his disk space.
I really don't foresee this happening anytime soon.
POEMA "EL ARMARIO DE MI ABUELA"
Joseph and moderators,
I'm not sure where to post my poem in the new site. Would it be possible for me to submit it here and have one of you put it in the correct folder or file. I was thinking of submitting it to Somos Primos or your podcast, but I'm not sure how to go about doing so. Please advise..... yolanda medina perez

POEMA "EL ARMARIO DE MI ABUELA"
Please send it to both. Somos Primos will get your poem much more
exposure, but I want to read it too.
make a word file and put in ??? (send it to me and we'll figure out
where it will go)
# Member Genealogy Files
# Reference Materials
# Books and Articles
eventually we'll probably have more catagories. Maybe one that called:
Oral Histories/Poems/Stories
maybe another called Recipes/Misc.
What other catagories do we need?
