I was reading the last part of the e-mail where it states that if a mother could be a godmother.
In Emergency Cases only.
In Guanajuato I was told several cases by my grandmother that when a child was ill at birth and was not going to make it....they would call upon a priest to come over and baptize the child and the mother would be the godmother if there was no one else available.
Another case I was told.....if parents lived out in the ranch but the priest was in the pueblo and a child was ill.....they would send someone to go and get the priest and if the priest was not available due to another person being ill and definitely not going to make it.....the priest would send the message to tell the mother to get some water and the mother was to baptize that child if she was really sure that the child was passing away .After, the priest would arrive and finished the baptism and would stay there for the funeral if the child passed away If.....the child did not pass away and the mother had already baptized...the child could not be baptized again.
And I believe this is still the case till today but now you'll know there are friends a families all around.
