Hello Charles and welcome to the group.
Regarding the inquisition documents held at Bancroft; I have viewed
part of the film that contains the petitions by Capitan Nicolas Flores
de la Torre (dated 27 Jul 1694) and Melchor Perez de la Torre. I got
through the entire petition by Nicolas, but only got through part of
Melchor's petition because of time constraints. Anyway, the gist of
it is Nicolas Flores de la Torre is requesting "dos Reales Cedulas"
for the encomienda de Juchipila. He testifies how, as the the direct
male line descendant of el Capitan Diego Flores de la Torre
Altamirano, he is the rightful heir to the encomienda. His petition
is backed by the testimonies, regarding his noble lineage, by
witnesses: Geronimo de Moscoso y Sandobal, Mathias Mejia and Matheo
de Robalcava. The witnesses state that Nicolas is the 2nd
great-grandson of el Señor Licenciado de la Torre, second Governor of
Nueva Galicia. Melchor's petition was dated 13 Aug 1671. I know
there are some older documents preceding Melchor's petition, but I was
unable to get that far in the film.
This film is of great interest to me because I have a Flores de la
Torre line that ties into this family (Maria Bacilia Flores de la
Torre b. abt 1740 in Guadalajara, daughter of Nicolas Flores de la
Torre and Maria Munoz de la Barba). Another item to note is that the
parents of Nicolas were Pedro Flores de la Torre and Clara de
Miramontes. I know there are a few people researching the Miramontes
family in the group. The film is not an easy read and a few frames
are nearly illegible. If you don't have the patience to go through
the microfilm (Bancroft won't allow you to handle the originals) you
can find the contents extracted in the book "Fundadores de Nueva
Galicia" by Guillermo Garmendia Leal. I cannot give an opinion as to
the accuracy or completeness of Mr. Garmendia Leal's extraction since
I have not gone through the entire film, but it is certainly a much
easier read than the film.
Good luck on your trip to Bancroft and if you'd like to join us at one
of our Northern California meetings please contact me or Alicia
directly.

Bancroft's Inquisition documents
Thank you Maria. This is incredible. I have traced about nine generations
of this family back to Sevilla, to Nicolas and some of his first cousins.
I plan on buying this book. I just read "The Encomenderos of New Spain
1521-1555" and it had a few good nuggets for me. Please contact me if you think
you can expand your Flores de la Torre branch.

can attend. Thank you for the invite.

Charles,
I notice you said you read "The Encomenderos of New Spain 1521-55. Where were you able to get it. I am still trying to get some information on Diego Delgado and Isabel Sorano. I know he goes back a good bit, probably in Zacatecas, but it has been a stonewall there.
Thanks for any information you can give me.

Juanita,
I purchased this book through barnesandnobles.com (maybe it was amazon.com).
Anyhow, those names do not appear in this book...sorry. It contains the 506
known encomenderos of that period. It also mentions other pertinent persons.
There are many books I want that are out of print but this one I got used
for under $20.

Bancroft's Inquisition documents
Charles,
Many thanks for your prompt reply! Will just have to perservere.
Of all the people that communicate via the ranchos site I have only met one person (Josie)
that had connections with the people that came with the De Escandon colonizer, and we matched! There are many people looking for missing kin that moved West, California, New Mexico, etc., but almost none for people that came to NE MEXICO.
I am looking for the parents of JOSEPH MARIA TAMAYO Y LUNA, born in REVILLA, TAMPS,. in 1738, which was long before REVILLA was "founded" in 1750. He died there also, in 1798. I have all the censuses from Revilla up to 1881, but they are not in any of them. I found JOSEPH MARIA, in his older age, and I found record of his death in the
Corpus Christ, Texas, reseach library, but not his parents.
I am really desperate! Thanks for listening.

I have yet to trace my Luna line. I think it connects to my father's
cousins. I heard him speak of them as a family branch that came to S. Cal at about
the same time as our Flores family 1920'S. I have a couple of names that he
wrote down ten years ago. My uncle ( 83 yrs old) says that Capt. Luna of the
''Roughriders" is rumored to be related to our family. I read that he came
from an old N. Mexico family. It does not seem to me that he would then be
related but????
As I turn to other families in my genealogy i will see if we connect.
It seems that genealogy is a life long search.
Buena suerte;
Charles Flores

As far as my Zacatecas research goes.....I am STILL looking for my elusive

with this couple! A "Swiss Chocolate hug" to all my Nuestros Ranchos
amigos!

To my "privileged" Prima Josie,
Received your Swiss choc hug, will be there another couple of weeks - or so. Well, exxxcccussseeemmme!
I, too, am frustrated with this equally elusive couple that I know for a fact were in Revilla in 1738, even though that is about 9 or 10 years before the villa was "founded" in 1750. I wish i knew where they came from, as they did not come with Vicente Guerra.
Please, please, continue to have fun!!!
