Surnames Researching: Esteinou
Hello Nuestros Rancheros!
I am a new member of this group and I am honored to be in your company. I
am researching the Esteinou name. My great-grand father Pedro Esteinou (b.
25 Nov 1828 in Itxassou, France) immigrated to Zacatecas in the mid 1850s
along with his two half-brothers, Juan Pedro Esteinou (b. 21 June 1836 in
Itxassou France) & Juan Esteinou (b. 6 Oct 1840 in Itxassou, France). They
came from the Basque region in France seeking opportunity in ranching and
farming. In Mexico they married and started families.
It is my belief that these family members are part of the Esteinou family
that once owned La Hacienda San Antonio de Sauceda. This information was
posted on Nuestros Rancheros by
2010, http://www.nuestrosranchos.org/node/18933, and on the Valparaiso
portal: http://portalvalparaiso.com/historia.html.
The following website for La Organización de Comunidades Zacatecanas de
Condado de Orange, CA., which is dedicated to the development and support of
Zacatecas, mentions the Esteinou family again, specifically Don Enrique
Esteinou, as the person who ordered the chapel be built on the property.

I have a few Enrique Esteinous in my tree, the first who was born between
1875 1880, in Zacatecas. I have been unable to locate his baptism record,
but the baptism record of his son Enrique Esteinou (b. 6 Oct 1897) indicates
that his paternal grandparents are Juan Pedro (b. 21 June 1836 in Itxassou,
France) & Mariana Huerta (b. about 1850 in San Mateo Cuatuepec), who are
noted in the 4th generation section of my tree.
What I dont know is which family member or members bought the property, and
what happened to that ownership. I would like to find out if these people
immigrated to Zacatecas knowing that they would be working this ranch or if
they happened upon the opportunity.
Can anyone suggest any books or other resources that might indicate some
helpful information about La Hacienda San Antonio de Sauceda or any of the
other Haciendas of the condado de San Mateo Valparaíso?
Many thanks and I look forward to being a member of this group as I continue
my research.
