I had a similar problem when searching for the Herrera surname around the
same time period. I think it was Arturo who pointed out to me that the Herrera
surname was attached to the surname "Marin de Herrera". Only later, can one
see the "marin" portion dropped or visa-versa. Anyway, this opened a whole
new door to research.
If I were to take a guess, I would suspect that "de la Torre y Romero" were
attached surnames much like "Marin de Herrera". I would proceed down the path
of Antonio de la Torre y Romero (maybe the one writing was too lazy to write
the whole name?)

Who is your Flores de la Torre ancestor? I would like to continue working
on this family. Do you have any additional information? Let me know if you
find any discrepancies.

Sorry, I made a mistake using cut-and-paste in the previous message. Ana
Flores de la Torre married Juan de Vera (or Juan de la Vera). Please
eliminate the second Josefa in my previous message. The correct information
is as follows:

Hello Bill,
I have this from Retoños de España:
"El Capitán Hernán Flores -que tenía parentesco con la familia de tambienconquistador
Pedro Pacho - fue originario de Salamanca en España, e hijo de Pedro Fuentes y de
Catalina Flores, hidosdalgo."

Hernán Flores de la Torre
Thanks, Sofía. I did have Hernán Flores as the son of Pedro Fuentes and
Catalina Flores. He took the surname from his mother, which was common
practice in the 16th century. He was Alférez Mayor under Nuño de Guzmán and
later promoted to Captain. Also, for those interested, he was previously
married to Isabel de Alvarado, daughter of Gómez de Alvarado, conquistador
de la Nueva España and brother of Pedro de Alvarado, conquistador and first
Adelantado de Guatemala. They were married in 1548 and, as far as I know,
did not have any children.
Take care, Sofía.
Regards,
Bill
