Does anyone know how to put the images of documents into pdf? I seem to only get .jpg files .
I would like I pdf doc if possible but am ignorant as to how to do this task.
No need for Photoshop to get Spanish Archive Images. You can have them emailed to you (up to five images at a time) directly from the site. They are sent as PDFs which you can view with Adobe Acrobat Reader software, which you can download for free.
3. Enter your search terms (in this screen you can limit the search by dates or by particular archive, i.e. Archivo General de Indias)
4. Click the "Buscar" button at the bottom of the page
5. You will get the results summarized by collection, e.g.
# Catálogos de Pasajeros a Indias
# Casa de la Contratación
# Audiencia de Quito
# Contaduría
# Indiferente General
# Escribanía de Cámara de Justicia
Click the relevant collection where you think your document will be found or browse through each one using the "Atras" button to go back to the summary. Using your browser button will not work. Images of licensias para pasar a Indias will be found in the "Casa de Contratacion" collection. Often the listings under the "Catalogo de pasajeros" will cross reference the Contratacion document from where the document was pulled. You can then search for the specific document using the "Busqueda por Signatura" option
6. Click on the camera icon that appears to the right of a document to view the image. Not all documents are yet digitized. The ones that are will have the camera icon.
7. To email the document to yourself, click on the document title from the list instead of the camera. Above the document description there will be several buttons, namely:
# Ver Imagenes (view images)
# Envio telematico (send electronically)
# Codigo de referencia (reference code)
# Imprimir (print)
Click on Envio telematico
8. Enter your email and the page numbers of the pages you would like emailed to you (up to five). You can enter a range, e.g. "1-5" or a comma seperated list, e.g. "1,5,8,10,20" You will obviously have had to see the image and possbily browse through the pages to see which ones you would lke sent to you, or simply keep entering five page ranges until you complete the document.
9. You will receive an email with a PDF attachment of the images you ordered.
I was successful using this method to get the documented I was interested in pieces. THe next questions is how do you put the vaious pieces together into one document? Does anybody know how todo this or is a full blown edition os adobe acrobat required to do so?

To join all the pages into one single document you need the full blown
version of Adobe Acrobat. If you only have a few pages (less than 10) I'll
be glad to do it for you. Just email them directly to my address, and tell
me the order in which they should appear. I'll return one multiple page
document for you.
There is also a free PDF creator program called PrimoPDF which I believe allows you to merge multiple PDFs into a single PDF file, as well as allowing you to print PDFs from any software.
You asked how Esther got the PDFs into her email... I posted instructions on how to get PDFs from Archivos Espanoles via email in an earlier message in this same thread...
To open jpg files, you need to make sure you have acrobat (pdf) program.
To view able to view those files you must do the following:
1. open pdf (acrobat) program
2. Click "file open"
3. then change "file type" to ALL FILES
this will allow you to view all documents save on your computer including those jpg.
4. double click on the selected document (jpg)
5. you should be able to view it.
To convert it into pdf, all you need to do is SAVE AS, name your document, and you are set.
Be sure your pdf program is 5 or higher version.
This should work just fine.
