SLC Trip in October

Do folks have an idea who is going to go to the SLC trip in October?

Josie has worked hard to get you information and it would be great if
you gave that trip a serious look if you are thinking you might go. I
for one will not be going as much as I would like to go.

If you think you might be going there is the matter of choosing a topic
for Professor George Ryskamp to speak on during that special session of
the seminar. If I was going I would love to hear a whole session on
nothing more than the Notario Records and how to get
a little better handle on how to research them.

So what do you all think?

SLC Ryskamp and Notarios

I am definitely going to try to make it. I think it will be a wonderful experience and a chance to meet some Ranchos members.

Joseph, I think that is a great idea for George Ryskamp to talk about notario records. I for one have only ever seen a few in Guadalajara but I understand that these were kept in many places, i.e. their collection was not centralized. I know that there are many notarial records in Zacatecas for people who lived in the region where I am concentratin (Colotlan, Totatiche, Tlaltenango).

Estaban Valdes Salazar was also telling me that they are now in the process of organizing and cataloguing all of the municipal archives in Tlaltenango and he believes there are some notarial records there as well.

That would be a great start... how does one find out who the relevant notary would have been and where he would have archived copies of the documents he created?

in the library....so busy we hardly have time to eat. I am sure Geo
Ryschamp will speak on whatever subject people want....

Josie and I are both looking forward to meeting as many
Rancheros as we can!!!

SLC Trip in October ??

I am tentatively planning on attending in October but not sure. We will be going to Zacatecas at the end of September for Las Fiestas Patronales of Tlachichila and hope to be back by then.

My sister and I are planning a trip to Salt Lake in May and we are preparing for our trip in accordance to Rich and Kitty Cortez' lesson. I don't believe anyone presented the minutes of the March 4 Northern California meeting in Sacramento. Kitty gave a presentation on how to plan and prepare for a trip to the Salt Lake City library. I am so excited that I know I squeak every time I think about it. We are generating an Excel database that can track all the documents we need to find by family group, film number and dates, whether marriage, baptism or other, this after having identified in our database if it's a document found on the IGI or by some other method.

We are lucky to have Rich and Kitty in this group. They are two
truly remarkable and talented people. They are very caring and giving people who not only bring their gifts and talents but their kindness and humanity to all those who come into contact with them.

went I bought the book "Going to Salt Lake City to do Family Research" by J.
Carlyle Parker and it helped me tremendously. ( I am not suggesting

"Notario" records. Are you interested just in Mexico. Just the
areas...Jalisco/Zac/Aguas ???

am expecting to receive the program schedule soon and will post it

Best Western Hotel is now under new ownership. This has caused a price increase
in the hotel rate I had quoted in my previous e-mails. I contacted another
hotel and got good rates there as well. I am providing both for your
convenience.

room for two persons. (Previously they had quoted $80.00 plus tax for a

There is a free trolley that passes nearby and takes you to the Library if you

SLC trip in October

Below is part of a
message I received today from Rich and Kitty Cortez regarding our trip to the
Hispanic Conference in SLC in October. It is very nice of them to offer to
help with the film orders because sometimes the film you need is not there and
needs to be ordered from the vault. This can take a day or so and reduces
our research time.......

Please let me know if
there are any other concerns that we can help you with. I am soooooo
excited about this trip to SLC!!!

in Mexico that they are researching, then we can check out their film in April
to see if they are already there. We have found that the family search.org site
is not updated enough. There are some films we ordered 2 years ago and looked at

Notice the 1-800 number above. We usually start
calling a month or two ahead of time so the films will be there for sure.

films in my name plus 5 films in my husband's name. Then my sister also orders
films for us. So gather the
groups film numbers that are needed and send
themto me, We can
help you order them.

The first thing we do when we arrive at SLC is make
sure ALL films we ordered are in. If they can't be found in the regular location
nor the overflow location, then we go to the window and re-order them. If this
is done early enough, they could be in by
2:30 that afternoon.

Or if the film class=692024118-20032006> you order is not clear, faded, not the
right one, then get to the window as soon as possible to order a better copy or
the correct one.
