I am new to the forum and researching various family members in Mexico. My question today is around the Yanez family in Nochistlan, Zacatecas. My ancestors include Gonzalo del Monte (circa 1650) and Jose Maria Yanez (circa 1800). I am curious if anyone knows the origins of the Yanez family. Did they come from Spain or Portugal? If anyone has anything they can share, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Yanez Family Origins
Hi Dolores,
Some of the first Yañez to be documented in Nochistlan are Gonzalo Yañez del Monte(married to Geronima Benavides)and Juan Yañez del Monte who was married to Maria de Medinilla. This was probably in the late 1500s or early 1600s sometime. You should try to look for a book by the name of : Genealogía de Nochistlán antiguo reino de la Nueva Galicia en el siglo XVII según sus archivos parroquiales. Its a rare book, some libraries may have a copy you can see. I know there are copies in California and Texas.
I'm not sure if you've used www.familysearch.org, but its a great resource. I looked for a Jose Maria Yanez in Nochistlan for years ranging from 1780-1830 and got a few hits, one for Jph. Maria Niebes Yanez Ximenez in 1788. I'm not sure if this is the one you are looking for, but its a place to start.
Check out the link below which is what I typed in for the search:

I navigated to this document and found this Jph. Maria's baptismal record see link below:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939N-PW3H-8?i=169&cc=1804458
The handwriting is very good compared to other docs of this time period. I'm not sure this is the Jose Maria you are looking for, but this was was born in La Estancia, also known as La Estancia de Los Delgadillos, which is very close to Monte de Yañez, another rancho, which was most likely named after one of the first Yañez in the Nochistlan area. I would use this website to look for information.

Juan Aguayo -
Some of my ancestors were named Na~nez. I think this came from Yanez or Llanez? I think mine came from Zacatecas in the 1700s or early 1800s to the Paso Del Norte area in Chihuahua. Was Nochustlan in Zacatecas back in the years you mentioned in your post? I know that states were combined and renamed back then
Thank you,

Hi Emilie,
Nueva Galicia was dissolved in 1824, so at that time Nochistlan was incorporated into the new state of Zacatecas.

Thanks, Juan - I will check this out. I have noted various Delgadillos in my tree as well. I see similar names on both sides of Yanez (intermarrying cousins). I was just trying to figure out their origins. I had heard they could be from Portugal but from records noting Espagnola it may be Spain. I do have any other question that you might be able to answer but I will post separately.
