I never thought Family Finder was going to be able to go back 10
generations or so. I have found three different people through Family
Finder with whom I share a different ancestor about 10 generations back.
WIth one person I share ancestors on the Macias Valadez and Martín del
Campo lines. With another person I share ancestors on the
Cervantes-Villaseñor and Macias Valadez lines. With the third person we
share Diego de Burgos Villaseñor y Tovar as an ancestor. There are a couple
more that if I had their great-grandparents info I would most likely be
able to find our common ancestor. If enough people did this then we could
triangulate and figure out which markers are for which ancestor and at the
same time some missing branches could be found for some people. I recommend
everyone, even siblings, parents, and aunts/uncles to take this test and to
look closely at their matches no matter how distant the match seems to be.
lineas.

Armando,
How many "suggested relationship," names appeared on your FamilyFinder (autosomal) print out?
If you did not contact everyone on your FF listing, what method did you use in deciding who to contact first?
You noted that FTDNA went back 10 generations, are you saying that the common ancestor that you shared with the three individuals that you mentioned wasn't established until that 10th generation linking?
If so, that was a remarkable find for all of you...most researchers are lucky to have traced their ancestry back 5 generations.
I'm now thinking that this FF autosomal testing is only helpful in establishing relationship for individuals that have a paper trail of at least 5 generations or that have known family members tested.
A couple of the 38 individuals that appeared on my husband's FF autosomal listing have no idea nor have done research because of just not knowing where their ancestors actually came from...it's for this reason that I think that the FF autosomal test in many cases leads to frustration and false hope of locating a much need clue to their ancestors.
I'm opened to suggestions and comments on how to change my current thinking about FamilyFinder autosomal testing...
Is it a fair conclusion to say that a suggested area of origin/region and or population % are solely based on ones DNA comparison to the testing lab's database for all individuals tested by a given lab?
Thank you,
Pat Silva Corbera

Armando, I think family finder go back more than 10 generations, for example in my case I am 5% Siberian (tribe Yakut) my mtDNA is haplogroup A and that sound that the native americans of my mother side came from that part thousands of years ago. I do not have any relative in the last 10 generations of Siberia.

Juan Francisco,
I just noticed your response from Sunday.
There is a difference between ancestral composition and finding relatives through Family Finder. I wasn't speaking of ancestral composition (Population Finder Percentage) which is what your post is about. You and I are posting about two different things that are found within Family Finder. On the Family Finder page you can see that both things are mentioned http://www.familytreedna.com/landing/family-finder.aspx
My post was about the fact that even though Family Finder announces that it can "Match with five generations of family" in reality it can match with relatives as far back as 10 generations. This is what I was pointing out, since it is not something posted about most places and it isn't mentioned by FamilyTreeDNA.
I was already aware that Population Finder Percentage goes back tens of thousands of years. I was also aware that Native Americans come from Siberia and therefore they have some ancestry from Siberia and that this shows up on the Population Finder Percentage. I am also 14% Native American with 0.88% being from Siberia. However, that is not what my original post was about, especially since this is something most people know about.
It seems the assumption was made that since Population Finder Percentage can go back tens of thousands of years that relatives from more than 10 generations ago can be found. That is not the case. They use centiMorgans (cM) of greater than 7 in order to find relatives. Since the units of cM go down dramatically past 5 generations it is harder and harder to find relatives the further back in time you go. However, it is possible up to 10 generations to find other people with at least 7 cM in common.
I hope that clears up the confusion between Population Finder Percentage and finding relatives in Family Finder.
