I wanted to thank the person who suggested that we email the following email (archivo@mail.sedena.gob.mx) for information about relatives who served in the Mexican military. I sent an email on July 31 and got a response back today that indicated they do have such information on my ancestor.
While my Spanish isn't that great, I think the letter says that it authorizes me to see the actual records in Mexico city, and take a digital photo of them, but not a photocopy because they are too delicate. Did anyone else get a response like this? While I'm excited about this new potential source of information because I thought the trail on my Pineda line had gone cold, I'm not really in a position to fly to Mexico city just to look at these documents. Any suggestions?
In case anyone else is interested, the person in question is named Pedro Pineda, my great-great grandfather in or near Tlaltenango, Zacatecas; he was born about 1851. I think the letter says he was a major in the Mexican military. Thanks!

Researching Mexican military
This was actually one of the topics that I wanted to get to as soon as I became a member on here. I noticed that you had asked in a post months ago for a list of regiments from Zacatecas. To note, it is possible many of our Zacatecas ancestors served in the state militia or national guard as Zacatecas touted a rather large force during the era of President de Santa Ana, at its height in the 1830's it is estimated to have stood at 17,000 men.
I have not found any particular Zacatecas national guard or militia unit that served during the Mexican-American war, considering no fighting took place near Zacatecas. However, there were numerous engagements for Zacatecas during la guerra de la reforma during the late 1850's and once again during the French intervention in the 1860's.
I have yet to find the specific regiments of this era though.
Researching Mexican military
Have you tried the Mexican Goverment site for Military people .
Here is a site that you can visit and request a copy of the person who served in the Mexican Military .
Give the full name of the person and the year or years that they may have served and they will answer you and e-mail you a copy .

Esther H.
Hi Esther,
Sorry , it´s taken me so long to respond I was having a great time in Puerto Vallarta . No phones , no internet . Sadly I came home tonight .
I never asked them about that Esther . I think it couldn´t hurt if you wrote them and gave them the info on your relative and see what happens . It could help us all out if they have info on soldiers in the early years .
