I wanted to thank Helyn, Maria, Kitty and everyone else who went to great lengths to organize what turned out to be a great conference and a great reunion of wonderful people and adept genealogists.
Having failed to have handouts for my presentation, I have posted them online on Nuestros Ranchos. Kitty Cortez's and Stanley Lucero's presentations are also in the same folder.

Thanks again to the organizers and it was a pleasure meeting all of the attendees and putting faces to so many names I had known only over the internet.
Presentations from the Nueva Galicia conference this weekend
I was not able to attend the conference so really appreciate you putting the information package together and in the file section. I enjoyed reading it. thank you for doing that.
I've also been watching the genealogy special hosted by Mr. Gates. I was struck by an interveiw with Emmit Smith when he shared that when he sat on the steps of the slave quarters after learning his family history he felt that he gave his ancestors closure as well as learning where he came from and appreciated even more where he's gone. He said he felt their presence at that moment. He shared with tears in his eyes and I just knew "He Got It! He displayed with emotion what researching means to me. It's not just names and dates but stories of real lives, places and people who it took to get me and you here today. It impowers me but also hands me a responsibility to not waste what's been handed me. Sometimes I had felt that all I got was survival skills and then I learned why these things were important by doing the research. When the records showed me the deaths of 4 of my Grandfather Marcelino Gutierrez siblings within 5 weeks, 3
from the flu and one from a scorpion sting I understood better the strength it took just to go on.
I believe I'm a better and more understanding person because of the geneology that I research for myself and others. I'm happy to see a series that showcases more than just names and dates but fleshes out the ancestors.

Nueva Galicia Conference
Will photos from the Conference be posted in the photo albums? I haven't had a chance to read the presentations, but hope to do so soon. It sounds like those of you who attended had an enlightening and wonderful experience.
Nueva Galicia Conference
I along with my wife Rosa want to thank all the organizers, presenters as well as all the primos and future primos :) at the conference. It was a very uplifting experience seeing all the enthusiasm. So many wonderful stories.... It still amazes me how close we really all are!
Nueva Galicia Conference
Thanks to all of the organizers of this conference and for the invitation to share some of my research regarding the Tlaxcalans. I enjoyed meeting so many people dedicated to learning about their ancestors and look forward to other opportunities to share and compare information.
I know that we will eventually link our ancestors and verify that we are primos.

I thank you for sharing your knowledge with us, it is amazing how much we do
not know, so you just open another door to our curiosity, I hope some day I
can find the main roots.

Nueva Galicia Conference
Stanley,
Thanks so much for your presentation on the Tlaxcalan connection to New Mexico and Zacatecas.
It so happened that I've been reading up on the early settlers of New Mexico so your presentation really hit many musical chords.
It was great to meet you and your wife and to share a meal with our extended families..........it truly did feel like we were all family. The wonderment in everyone of our faces was amazing. Yolanda from the midwest, so great to meet you prima, somewhere we'll connect on the Jauregui lines.

Presentations from the Nueva Galicia conference this weekend
I have now posted Rose Hardy's and George Fulton's presentations in the file folder as well.
Rose's presentation was a review of the 1648 Aguascalientes census and George's presentation is on the use of software to produce genealogical reports.
Again, all of the presentations are available at:

Matrilineal naming practices
Arturo,
I enjoyed your matrilineal naming practices presentation as posted. I was intrigued by the maternal surnames that had "o" in them, e.g. Haro o Saudedo.
In this light, can you comment on the following, particularly the mother of
the groom, understanding that the groom is illegitimate? I don't understand the "o digo" part.
"Francisco Barrios con Maria Cruz Reyes 3/30/1880" (Civil Marriage
Registration, Valparaiso, Zacatecas)
"Francisco, 22 anos, jornalero, hijo natural de Matias Barrios, difunto, y de
Guillerma Barrios o digo Sanchez"
Thanks,
Ed
Matrilineal surnames
Ed:
In my presentation, the use of the "o" as in "Maria Haro o Saucedo" is merely to designate that the person used both of those surnames. As in examples you have probably run across, some people switched back and forth between surnames throughout their lives.
In your example, I am not sure, but I would venture to guess that the priest simply made a transcription error and rather than make his book look sloppy with text crossed out simply corrected himself. I have seen similar entries and the name after the "o digo" or "me corrigo" is usually the correct name.
Nueva Galicia Conference
I also would like to give a big "Thanks" to the organizers and attendees of the Nueva Galicia Conference....I had a wonderful time getting to know everyone in person. Even though I have been doing this for the past 20 years, I'm always learning something new. I love helping others "crack the mysterious genealogy code", as I call it "cracking the code" to their ancestry.

Nueva Galicia Conference
Thank You Rose for your contribution to our first conference, it was very nice to meet you at last.
Saludos,
Alicia
