Viuda and Soltera

By gpf13 | 12:22 AM MST, Fri February 27, 2009

Can the terms "viuda" (widow) and "soltera" (spinster, or single woman) be used interchanged? That is, could "soltera" describe a women who is actually a widow?

I have a 1739 death record from Aguascalientes for Josepha Rodrigues where "soltera" is used. Her parents are named, but there is no other information. I also have what may be her husband's (Salvador Ponse) death record from 1738, where it states that he is married to Josepha Rodrigues.

Viuda y soltera

Saludos.

Viuda and Soltera

I also know about an unmarried man in Aguascalientes who had two
illegitimate children with the same woman. He is listed as "soltero" in his
burial record. His daughter, who married 10 years after her father's death,
is listed as "hija natural" in "informaciones matrimoniales". Her mother's
name is included in the same record. Her father died single because he
never married her mother.
