Fonseca Montenegro

By Evie | 7:36 AM MST, Tue March 26, 2013

I am looking for the significance of Montenegro in the Fonseca Montenegro name and the clue it might provide in further research. I have traced the Fonsecas from San Diego de Alejandria and Arandas, JALISCO back to Salamanca, GUANAJUATO in 1649 with the child of Joseph De Fonseca Montenegro and Cathalina Ortiz Calderon. This is where I am stumped. The Montenegro name occurs for over a hundred years then disappears. Thanks. Evie

José de Fonseca Montenegro & Josefa Martínez (Martín Mateos)

José de Fonseca Montenegro & María Josefa Martínez (Martín Mateos) were married in Salamanca (Gto.) on April 15th 1711. Does anyone know of a source that documents his parents or his connection to the other de fonseca Montenegro families of that time period in Guanajuato?

Fonseca Montenegro

Evie,

I have not studied nor research too terribly this family of Fonseca Montenegro, but I do know they are related to my family, doing a quick search, I noticed the following: Francisco de Fonseca Montenegro married one of my relatives Gertrudis Méndez de Torres on 23 August 1711 in Salamanca. I have not been able to identify her parents as of yet. Their son, Isidro Joaquín de Fonseca Montenegro married a distant relative, Micaela Josefa Guerrero, daughter of José Guerrero and Micaela Méndez de Torres on 2 September 1743 in Valle de Santiago, Gto.

They also married into other families of primary interest in the region namely García de Aragón and married into Mariano González Leal´s family. María Guadalupe de Fonseca Montenegro married Francisco Lobo who was from Irupuato. Their daughter, María Francisca Lobo married Matías Antonio Busso, their posterity would eventually married into Muñatones de la Sierra and Leal de Araujo and González de Ruvalcaba, sucessively. You might want to email him, I am sure he has more information on the Fonseca Montenegro, it would be nice to identify the patriarchs of the family and research the entire family. As we understand who they were, and who they married, we will begin to see various patterns of marriage, etc. Many families accustomed to marry close relatives than outside. I know this might be too much of help, but I at least am glad to see we are somehow linked.
